Is abdominoplasty right for me?

The ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are those with a combination of loose or excess skin in the abdomen and / or excess abdominal fat.

Almost all women who have had children have some degree of abdominal muscle laxity. Any of these conditions, or all three, can be corrected by an abdominoplasty.

The tummy tuck is recommended for those who:

  • They enjoy good physical health and a stable weight.
  • Have realistic expectations about the tummy tuck.
  • They are not smokers.
  • They are not consistent with the large size of his stomach.

Preoperative for Abdominoplasty

Dr. Elizabeth Ruiz makes all pre-operative recommendations for you to prepare for abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a procedure that requires hospitalization and is always performed under intravenous anesthesia. Some patients prefer that the procedure be performed in a clinic where they can spend the night under medical supervision.

After intravenous anesthesia has been administered to the patient who feels nothing, Dr. Ruiz performs the abdominal liposuction as needed to remove stubborn fat deposits under the skin.
Then a horizontal incision on the pubic region, which extends from the hip bone forth, is done. Although in aabdominoplastya significant amount of incision is required, it is strategically located in an area that can be easily hidden by the line of underwear or bikini.
Dr. Ruiz removes excess skin before repairing the underlying muscle and other tissue structures of support. To do so, permanent internal stitches are positioned in a corset pattern to hold the muscles and tissues repaired in place after surgery.

Then she removes the remaining skin and closes the incision with absorbable sutures outside. The navel is aligned with the new abdomen and a small incision is made to create the new navel. The treated area is dressed with soft bandages and compression garments that must be worn for several weeks after surgery, as stated by Dr. Ruiz.

Recovering from a Tummy Tuck

Once the effects of anesthesia have worn off, patients can return home. A responsible person must stay with the patient at least 24 hours after abdominoplasty.

Patients recovering from a tummy tuck can be considered to be out of work or their daily activities for at least two weeks. After surgery, patients should get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting. However, they should walk around the house every two hours. Short walks help minimize the risk of developing blood clots in the lower extremities and help stimulate blood circulation and tissue healing.

The abdomen may feel pain or numbness. The treated area may also be swollen or bruised, but it is expected that these normal symptoms disappear over time.

Result of Abdominoplasty

The results of a tummy tuck are a flat, firm abdomen and body contouring provided to your body and weight. The swelling and the inability to remain upright until it heals internally will not let you see great results immediately. Your new contour and belly will begin to be evident one or two weeks after surgery. The process may take about twelve weeks to see the final result.
