Brachioplasty

The loose skin in the upper arm can occur as a result of a significant weight loss or aging process due to gravity, skin laxity and skin thinning. Despite rigorous workouts and diet, some patients feel they cannot get rid of those sagging arms. Patients tend to hide their arms wearing long sleeves because of the shame that these bring them.

Please contact Dr. Elizabeth Ruiz for more information on Brachioplasty to schedule a consultation and assessment of your case.

Is Brachioplasty right for me?

If the bottom of your arms are down or look loose and full due to excess skin, this procedure is right for you. Thin people can also have sagging upper arms due to a prior weight loss, aging and genetics.

Even regular exercise and strength training cannot get rid of excess flabby skin in this area, exercise can tone and stretch the muscles, but cannot tighten the skin.

Brachioplasty is recommended for those who:

  • Adults with significant excess skin of the upper arm and laxity.
  • Adults of any age whose weight is relatively stable and are significantly overweight.
  • Healthy people who do not have medical conditions that can impair healing or increase the risk of surgery.
  • People with a positive attitude and realistic expectations.
  • The best way to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure is through a consultation with Dr.Ruiz.

Preoperative for Brachioplasty

Dr. Elizabeth Ruiz makes all pre-operative recommendations for you to prepare for brachioplasty.

Brachioplasty or Arm Lift Procedure

The arm lift is a body contouring procedure that lifts, tightens and shapes the contour of the arm, removing excess skin and fat to rejuvenate the appearance of the arm.

Requires only a limited incision in the armpit which is not noticed or if there is a lot of excess skin then it becomes necessary to do from the armpit to the elbow, along the inside of the arm. The procedure is ambulatory and take approximately one to two hours.

Before making the incision, Dr. Ruiz can perform liposuction to remove excess fat arm. Excess skin is removed then tightened and sutured with absorbable sutures.

Brachioplasty recovery

After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions, and the arms can be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling. A small tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain excess blood or fluid that can accumulate.

Recovery may include mild discomfort immediately after the procedure. It is normal to have some swelling and bruising, you will have the highest peak of pain two or three days after surgery and then it will disappear after two weeks. Raising your arms on pillows can help reduce inflammation and increase comfort during recovery.

Results of Brachioplasty

Brachioplasty results will be long lasting, provided you can keep your weight stable and overall fitness. As your body ages, it is natural to lose some firmness in the arms, but most of the improvement will be relatively permanent.

Many patients that get a brachioplastydone also consider other body contouring procedures such as tummy tucks and cruroplasty.
