Otoplasty

Ear surgery or otoplasty, is a procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the ears of a person. Although otoplastydoesn’t affect hearing, itcan provide great psychological benefits to anyone who has been teased about the size or shape of your ears, people who have had a serious injury to the ear or simply someone who wants to improve their appearance.

This surgery can be performed at any age, preferably before the child can start school at about 5 years and thus avoid psychological and low self-esteem problems, and feedback from their peers.it has the advantage of having a quick recovery, where the scars remain on the back of the ear so that they are not very noticeable.

Otoplasty usually has two functions:

Setting prominent ears closer to the head, and reducing the size of large ears.

Ear surgery may also be helpful for the following conditions:

  • Large or protruding ears.
  • Torn or stretched lobes.
  • Lobes with large creases and wrinkles.
  • You can also build a new ear for patients who do not have ear injuries or a birth defect.

Please contact Dr. Elizabeth Ruiz for more information about ear surgery or otoplasty to schedule a consultation and assessment of your case.

Preoperative for Otoplasty

Dr. Elizabeth Ruiz makes all pre-operative recommendations for you to prepare for ear surgery.

Ear surgery or Otoplasty

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery usually lasts two to three hours and is performed on an outpatient basis. The type of anesthesia normally used depends on the patient’s age. General anesthesia for young patients and a local anesthetic and a sedative for older children and adults is recommended.

Otoplastybegins with a small incision made behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear meets the head. The cartilage is then molded and takes its new position to achieve the desired look. In some cases, skin is removed, but the cartilage is left in one piece and simply folds back on itself to achieve the look of a smaller ear.

After molding the cartilage into the desired shape, sutures are placed to keep the ear in the new position until the ear heals. The head is wrapped with a bandage to secure the position of the ears. For better balance, both ears can be operated even if only one of them has a problem.

Recovery from Otoplasty

Otoplasty or ear surgery is an outpatient procedure. A bandage over his ear is placed for a week to help reduce the inflammation that occurs in the affected area for a few days after surgery area, the pain is minimal and can be easily relieved with analgesics.

Most adult patients return to work about five days after ear surgery. Children can return to school after a week, but must limit their activities until the ears are completely healed.
